A graduate of St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, Dr Dua obtained a M .Sc (Econ) degree from London School of Economics, UK. The University of Mumbai had awarded him a doctorate in economics for his work on Economics and Management of Urban Renewal Programs. He also secured diplomas in Business Administration, Marketing Management and Russian Language.
Ajay Dua was a member of the IAS for 37 years whereafter he moved to the private sector. Since then he has sat on the Global / Indian Advisory Councils of several MNCs including Panasonic Inc, Rothschild & Co, Rio Tinto Ltd, Bain India Ltd and BNP Paribas Bank and till the last year, advised Mitsui (India) & Kyosan Electric Equipment Manufacturing Ltd, both of Japan besides sitting on the Boards of Directors of Dabur India, Dabur International Ltd, JK Laxmi Cement Ltd and Bussan Auto Finance Ltd. He was the Chairman of the Boards of Directors of Areva (T&D ), now renamed separately as Alstom Transmission Ltd and Schneider Distribution Ltd. and HSBC Securities Pvt. Ltd. He continues on the Board of the Kirloskar Pneumatics and Compressors Ltd.
While in IAS, Dr Dua held a variety of senior responsibilities including. Vice Chairman cum CEO of Maharashtra Housing & Area Development Authority (MHADA) Maharashtra Industries Development Corporation and Maharashtra Small Industries Development Corporation Ltd besides Municipal Commissioner of Pune City. At the Centre, he was the Secretary, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, DG of ESIC & Joint Secretary, Min of Power. He has served as the Chairman of the Governing Council of the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, National Productivity Council and National Manufacturing Centre For Excellence , Bangalore. For a term each, he was elected the Chairman of the Asian Productivity Council, Tokyo & Vice Chairman of International Social Security Organisation, Geneva, He has served on the Boards of IDBI, EXIM Bank of India, NTPC, PowerGrid, Power Finance Corporation, Rural Electrification Corporation and Bhakra Beas Management Board, For almost two years, he was the Chairman cum Managing Director of National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) and earlier as Chairman cum MD of Rural Electrification Corporation.
He is a regular commentator on economic and financial issues in media, both print and electronic. For the last one year , he has been writing on Indian foreign policy prioritising making up with the neighbours and focussing on Asia which is economically growing faster than any other part of the world .An avid golfer , he has been President of Delhi Golf Club.
