With over three and half decades of service in the higher education sector, Dr. Tayeb Kamali is well known for his leadership in creating an innovative and entrepreneurial higher education environment for which he was recognized with France’s highest award for education, the Ordres des Palmes Académiques., and was also awarded an honorary Doctorate in Engineering from the University of Waterloo, Canada. Earlier this year he was awarded the Fellowship of the Aeronautical Society of India. His most significant contributions include the pioneering adoption of learning-by-doing and the implementation of a nationwide mobile learning initiative supported by leveraging partnerships with global leaders in education technologies including Apple and Microsoft.

Dr. Kamali is the Chairman of the Board of the Abu Dhabi School of Management, and also a board member at a number of institutions including the Mohammed bin Rashid School of Government (MBRSG), Gulf Islamic Investments, Vision Bank and Emirates Cricket Board (ECB). Further, he chairs the Academic Committee at MBRSG, as well as the Selection Committee for ECB, the United Arab Emirate’s national cricket authority.

Dr. Kamali currently serves as the Director General for Education Training Development at the UAE Ministry of Interior, where he led efforts to restructure policing and security education and training. Based on international benchmarking with institutions in the US, UK, Europe and Australia, the new program was designed to prepare the next generation of police officers to effectively deal with the extremely complex and ever evolving challenges of the 21st century. As a result, the program was accredited nationally and internationally respectively by the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the Ministry of Education, UAE, and the International Association of Directors of Law Enforcement Standards and Training (IADLEST) in the U.S. Further, the Police College also won IADLEST’s Award of Excellence for scoring above and beyond on several of its 54 sub-standards.

Dr. Kamali is a founding member of the Cleveland Clinic International Leadership Board, where he works closely with other distinguished members from around the world in support of the Cleveland Clinic’s vision to provide compassionate, highest quality healthcare in a setting of education and research.

Earlier, Dr. Kamali was part of the founding group of the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) where he also served as the Vice Chancellor. Under his leadership, HCT grew to be the United Arab Emirates’ largest higher education institution with 17 campuses across the UAE serving over 20,000 students. He established the region’s first technology park that brought together industry and academia in a unique partnership to promote applied research and commercialization of innovative and sustainable solutions to urban challenges. He established the CERT Technology Park that was the first and only commercial entity of its kind, within a higher education institution, with a portfolio of engagements valued over US$ 275 million with annual revenues of over US$ 95 million.

As the founding CEO of the Centre of Excellence for Applied Research & Training (CERT), Dr. Kamali was tasked with establishing Emirates Driving Company (EDC), Abu Dhabi’s first driver training and road safety academy. Set up as a private-public partnership (PPP) initiative, this premier institute was formed in partnership with Swedish Road Authority. He served over 15 years as its chairman during which time EDC became and continues to be a profitable public joint stock company that exclusively provides driver training and road safety education based on international best practices.

Dr. Kamali’s passion and expertise is in the field of aeronautics for which he holds a number of degrees including a Doctorate in Engineering from George Washington University, USA, Master’s degree in Airline Operations, and Bachelor degrees in Aircraft Technology, and Aeronautical Engineering from Embry- Riddle Aeronautical University, USA.
